BEM calls for rapid steps towards a mobility turnaround after government collapse: Time for action
Berlin, November 7, 2024 – After the break-up of the “Ampel” coalition, Germany is facing a decisive change of course. The German Federal Association for eMobility (BEM) is calling on the incumbent federal government to seize the opportunity presented by this political realignment and clearly prioritize electric mobility and zero-emission mobility. This will enable Germany to achieve its climate targets, secure its economic future and strengthen social prosperity.
“Germany and Europe are facing enormous challenges. We can only successfully master the necessary transformation through technology-driven and clear economic guidance in the field of electromobility and renewable energies,” says Christian Heep, Chairman of the BEM. “A progressive and determined economic, environmental and location policy can sustainably promote jobs, value creation and security and encourage investment and the establishment of companies in line with climate and environmental goals.”
Social development as a challenge for democracy and the mobility transition
The BEM views social developments with great concern. The increasing shift to the right and growing disenchantment with politics not only threaten the successes in climate and environmental protection, but also the basic democratic order itself. Heep emphasizes: “Without a functioning democracy, there will be no turnaround in mobility. In order to regain citizens’ trust in democratic institutions, we need more transparency and clear, comprehensible communication of political decisions.”
The BEM is convinced that the spread of fake news and half-truths contributes significantly to a loss of trust and uncertainty. “Political education and the explanation of complex interrelationships, as successfully practised by Economics Minister Habeck, are crucial for engaging citizens and strengthening the democratic order,” emphasizes Markus Emmert, Chairman of the BEM.
Climate-friendly mobility as an economic and social opportunity
Many necessary measures in the field of electromobility and emission-free mobility have recently been slowed down by compromises within the former traffic light coalition and outdated budget planning. “Sticking to the debt brake without taking the necessary investments into account has severely hampered development,” says Emmert. “In particular, the hesitation to reduce climate-damaging subsidies is counterproductive and contradicts the federal government’s climate targets.”
The BEM is calling for a resolute steering policy that abandons short-term interests and focuses on a clear, technology-oriented strategy. In order to promote electromobility and the expansion of renewable energies, a modern subsidy policy is needed that includes non-monetary measures in particular and eliminates inconsistencies such as the promotion of fossil technologies.
For more trust and transparency: actively involving citizens in change
“It is crucial to win people over to this path. We must not allow the necessary changes to be perceived as a hurdle or a burden,” emphasizes Heep. “Transparent communication and the involvement of citizens in political decisions are now more important than ever in order to secure social support for the mobility transition and a sustainable economy.”
The BEM is committed to increasing public awareness of zero-emission mobility and improving the legal framework. “Germany and Europe need technological determination and a targeted strategy in order to successfully master the challenges of the energy and mobility transition. The potential for growth, innovation and sustainable prosperity is enormous – we must not let the opportunities in the field of electromobility go to waste,” summarizes Heep.
