BEM press release: Electromobility & energy law: BEM brings minimum connection fee into the discussion

06.10.2021 / BEM press release

To ramp up electromobility and secure the associated grid access, the German eMobility Association (BEM) has called for the basic supply of German households with a minimum connection capacity of 3.7 kW per associated parking space. At the international trade fair for charging infrastructure and electromobility, Power2Drive, which started today in Munich, BEM board member Markus Emmert discussed the need for a secure power supply, which could be guaranteed by a basic supply obligation of German energy supply companies for mobility.

‘Although the legislator is promoting the construction of wallboxes in single and multi-family homes, there is no push function for the installation of grid connections on the part of the energy industry,’ reported Emmert at a specialist panel. The energy expert therefore proposes a legally anchored minimum connection capacity in the electricity grid, which, once installed, would significantly simplify the connection of charging infrastructure and help to significantly advance electromobility. In detail, Emmert mentioned the basic supply obligation from Section 2 (1) of the Energy Industry Act, which should be explicitly expanded to include the basic supply for mobility.

In other words, if the electricity connection could be used for charging e-vehicles in a standardised way, many consumers would no longer have to make the tedious and time-consuming application for a grid connection with the grid operators.
For some time now, the BEM has been emphasising the growing interaction between the energy world and the automotive industry for the mobility transition. According to the association, this not only means increasing the proportion of electricity from renewable energy in the power grid, but also changing numerous aspects of energy law. Electric vehicles and charging infrastructure can be integrated into the grid operation in order to make everyday mobility emission-free. This includes the mass use of batteries in combination with PV systems as well as the processing of digital data to analyse the resource consumption of mobility.

About the Bundesverband eMobilität e.V. (German Federal Association for eMobility)

The Bundesverband eMobilität (BEM) is an association of companies, institutions, scientists and users from the field of electromobility who are committed to converting mobility in Germany to electromobility based on renewable energies. The tasks of the BEM include the active networking of economic players for the development of sustainable and intermodal mobility solutions, the improvement of the legal framework for the expansion of e-mobility and the enforcement of more equal opportunities in the transition to low-emission drive concepts. The association was founded in 2009. It organises 300 member companies with an annual turnover of over 100 billion euros and over one million employees worldwide.
