Mobility of the future with autonomous air taxis & Low Altitude Economy
Autonomous air taxis and the so-called low altitude economy are picking up speed. An exciting field report with interesting insights by Carsten Senz, Vice President Corporate Communications at Huawei Germany, shows how autonomous flying with delivery drones and air taxis (eVTOLs) is not only a reality, but is already being put into practice. The drone and air taxi market is developing rapidly, especially in China.
In Shenzhen, the industry will already have a turnover of USD 12 billion by 2023, with 1,500 companies operating in this sector. The market is estimated to reach USD 290 billion by 2030. Urban mobility is changing fundamentally, while the infrastructure is growing at a rapid pace. In Shenzhen, there are already numerous launch sites for delivery drones, fixed routes and a growing network of control centres. The drones are currently mainly used by public authorities, but private flight services are soon to emerge, comparable to an air Uber.
In addition to urban drone transport, there is also potential for inter-city transport. While current drones have a range of around 30 kilometres, other models in the EHang showroom can reach up to 400 kilometres. Technological progress is proceeding at a rapid pace. Interest in this technology is growing, particularly in South East Asia and the Middle East. This is not just about the use of air taxis and drones, but also about comprehensive sustainable living spaces with electrical infrastructure, renewable energies and battery storage.
This is not science fiction: urban mobility is now changing, an air revolution is taking place and this development makes sense in Asian megacities with their dense transport networks and many delivery scooters. But which region in Germany could act as a pioneer here and take the plunge into a new dimension of mobility?
