Scholz proposes a new bonus for e-cars – and the EU is listening
On Tuesday, 21 January, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) argued in favour of Europe-wide subsidies for electric cars. Scholz told the Chemnitzer Freie Presse that the purchase of electric cars could not simply be decreed – however, he was confident due to the growing choice in the sector. According to the Chancellor, the EU Commission was also open to this proposal.
There are also currently problems with grid expansion. The expansion of charging stations is happening at a rather moderate pace. According to Markus Emmert from the German eMobility Association, the current level of around 130,000 public charging points is ‘quite ok’, at least when measured against the current e-vehicle fleet. However, there is still a lack of charging points ‘in suitable areas’ and ‘the charging points are not sufficiently distributed across the country’, the expert was quoted as saying by MDR.
