The future
drives autonomously
The German government has adopted a strategy for autonomous driving in the cabinet, which is intended to pave the way for regular operation and create the conditions for further advancing this key technology and utilising its enormous opportunities. The aim is to establish Germany as a leading global centre of innovation and production.
Germany has been a pioneer with a comprehensive legal framework since 2021 that enables the use of autonomous vehicles on public roads. The strategy focuses on applications in public transport and freight transport in order to make mobility more efficient, sustainable and safe. Autonomous driving can also increase road safety, improve access to rural areas and counteract the shortage of professional drivers in the long term.
»Autonomous driving is a key technology for innovative, clean and barrier-free mobility. With our strategy, we are creating an innovation-friendly framework that business and industry must fill with life. The future is autonomous driving«, said Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital and Transport Affairs.
